SUTTER MIDDLE SCHOOL

By Jennie Lewis, Grants Committee Chair

In November, The Folsom Garden Club (FGC) awarded a total of $10,500 to nine non-profit projects.  The Grants Committee just began receiving some reports of early completion of those nine projects.

Sutter Middle School has undergone a significant rebuilding of their campus.  As a part of the renovations, an outdoor classroom was constructed with redwood planting beds as well as a large patio area for seating.

The plan is to hold classes regarding the earth, horticulture and gardening.  The first phase of the project is to obtain seating for the students.  Thus, the school received a $1,500 grant to purchase seating and secure them to the site. Their goal is to obtain 20 garden benches (enough for 30-40 students) so that they could begin using the garden area to stage classes.  Through the FGC grant, they were able to purchase the first eight benches.

Once the 20 benches have been purchased and installed, then the school plans to purchase a shed and green house in Phase 2 and 3 of the project

The Sutter Middle School staff expressed their appreciation to the FGC for our generous grant to help them reach their ultimate goal of  an Outdoor Classroom in their new garden location.
