October Plants of the Month

Tibouchina urvilleana “Princess Flower”

Zones 9 to 11, grows 6-8 feet tall and wide

Native to Brazil.  Soft velvety leaves and dark purple blooms from spring to fall.

Full sun, likes afternoon shade when hot.  Likes damp soil, but good drainage.

Good in pots, so it can be moved when frost threatens.  Protected sunny courtyard would be perfect.

Add slow release fertilizer in spring and manure mulch for summer.

“Dolphin”  Senecio

This succulent is a cross between “String of Pearls” and “Hot Dog Cactus”.

Good in a hanging planter, occasional water and no frost.

On close inspection, the leaves look like little dolphins leaping into the air.

Would look good in a blue pot, like the ocean.
